If you visited your doctor and he told you you were diagnosed with diabetes, in some ways from a disease perspective you could consider yourself lucky since diabetes is one disease you can control.

Not being aware of the fact that you have diabetes can be a huge detriment to your health. Knowing that you have it can be positive because it can be controlled if not cured. The fact is is that our of 16 million Americans who have diabetes, nearly one third of them are getting more sick because they do not know they have diabetes.

Obesity and its handmaiden, an inactive lifestyle, are major risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes. According to some estimates, at least 80 percent of people with this type are obese. Other risk factors include having a parent or sibling with the disease; being African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic or Pacific Islander; having higher than normal (but not necessarily diabetic) glucose levels; and having high blood pressure or cholesterol levels.

Although your family or ethnic background is not your choice, a choice you can make is to change the style of life you are living to control Type 2 diabetes- or even to entirely prevent it. And the changes you make in your lifestyle do not have to be dramatic changes. Interesting to note is that in a recent government study boderline diabetics who lost just seven percent of their body weight, switched to a low-calorie, low-fat diet, and exercised only moderately, such as a brisk walk for 2.5 hours weekly reduced their chances of getting the disease by an amazing 58 percent. Many Type 2, but not Type 1 diabetics can keep the disease under control without drugs.

Once you have it, diabetes is a daily companion that cannot be ignored. You need to pay close attention to what you eat, monitor your glucose levels, take your medicine if you’re on a prescription, and keep an eye out for trouble signs. But if you’re careful, you can lead a normal life.
